Lasorda Family Wines: A Legacy of Passion, Family, and Excellence

Ryan Lenett

In the picturesque region of Paso Robles, Lasorda Family Wines stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of its founders, Baseball Hall of Fame manager Tommy Lasorda and his nephew David Lasorda. Established in 2017, this family-run winery encapsulates Tommy’s fearless spirit, his love for family, and his deep appreciation for wine.

The Heart of a Champion

Tommy Lasorda’s legendary career in baseball is well-documented, but fewer people know about his early introduction to winemaking. Before he ever donned a baseball uniform, Tommy learned the art of winemaking from his father, Sabatino Lasorda, an Italian immigrant from Tollo in the Abruzzo wine region. These early experiences in Norristown, Pennsylvania, where Tommy would help his father press grapes and distribute homemade wine to family and friends, planted the seeds for what would eventually become Lasorda Family Wines.

Tommy’s legacy in baseball—marked by 1,599 wins, two World Series titles with the Los Angeles Dodgers, and an engaging personality—translates seamlessly into the world of winemaking. Lasorda Family Wines seeks to honor Tommy’s legacy by embracing his passion for excellence and his deep-rooted love of family with every bottle.

Crafting a Legacy

Lasorda Family Wines produces a distinguished portfolio of wines that highlight Paso Robles’s unique terroir. Under the guidance of winemakers Anthony Gallegos and Terry Culton, the winery crafts exceptional varietals, including its flagship Cabernet Sauvignon and Super Tuscan Blend. These wines reflect the meticulous care taken from vineyard to bottle.

The winemaking process at Lasorda Family Wines begins with hand-harvesting grapes at optimal ripeness from the Domenico and Acquarello Estate Vineyards. The grapes undergo careful sorting before being transported to a state-of-the-art facility for fermentation. The winemaking team employs a blend of traditional techniques and modern technology to extract the full expression of each varietal. The wines are then aged in a mix of French and American oak barrels, allowing them to develop their complex flavors and robust structures. Each bottle is a testament to the Lasorda commitment to quality and craftsmanship.

Overcoming Challenges

Launching Lasorda Family Wines presented its own set of challenges. Establishing a brand identity in a saturated market required leveraging Tommy Lasorda’s legendary status and the family’s dedication to producing high-quality wines. Participating in wine festivals and events throughout Southern California helped gain exposure and build a loyal customer base.

Signature Wines

The Super Tuscan Blend stands out as a signature wine among their distinguished offerings. Introduced in late 2021 as a tribute to Tommy Lasorda, the blend features 50% Sangiovese, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Malbec, and 10% Petit Verdot. The iconic “Number 2” on the bottle honors Tommy’s career with the Dodgers. This blend, crafted in the style of Italy’s famous Super Tuscan wines, pays homage to the Lasorda family’s Italian heritage and has quickly become a favorite among wine enthusiasts.

Commitment to Sustainability

While traditional winemaking practices are at the core of their production, Lasorda Family Wines is committed to sustainable practices. By partnering with Le Vigne Winery, they access a variety of plantings and a state-of-the-art facility, ensuring cost efficiency and environmental sustainability. This partnership also allows them to produce a diverse range of high-quality wines.
