Choosing the Right Wine Key (Wine Opener)

If you’re going to drink wine frequently, or even if you’re just going to have a glass once in a while, you want to make it as simple as possible actually to open that bottle, right? You want to make sure that you can get to the wine when you want it and that you aren’t spending a whole lot of time on the process. In order to do that you’re going to need a wine key. But what exactly is a wine key? How does it work? Should you have one? Let’s take a look, shall we?

What is a Wine Key?

If you are a big wine connoisseur then you probably already know what a wine key is, but for the rest of us, let’s recap a little, shall we? A wine key, also known as a sommelier knife, is a wine opener that you use to help open a bottle of wine. It’s an old tool that’s been around for quite some time since 1882 to be exact, and it enables you to get the right leverage while you’re opening a bottle since they can be quite challenging to pull out with just the corkscrew portion.

The wine key has two important aspects to it, the first is the wine opener itself, what you might already know if you like to drink wine, or if you’ve ever been somewhere where others were drinking wine. The second aspect is quite simple to use and doesn’t really look like much of anything. It’s a wide “u” shaped piece that allows you to hook into the cork and pull it out more easily, without having to worry about that cork breaking in your bottle of wine. After all, that’s only going to make it more difficult to get out.

How it Works

When you use a wine key, you start by cutting the foil of the bottle to access the cork. Once you’ve done this, you’re ready actually to use the corkscrew itself. You insert the corkscrew into the cork of the bottle carefully, making sure it goes into the center of the cork. You also need to keep it in the center as you screw it down. When you get to just one twist remaining it’s time to stop so you don’t push straight through into the bottle.

Now you’re ready to start pulling the cork slowly out of the bottle, but this is where that other piece of the tool comes in. There’s a little bit of a hook at the top of the device that you want to set at the lip of the bottle with just a little bit of pressure. You’ll slowly use this hook piece as a fulcrum as you leverage the cork out just about halfway. You don’t want to go too much further than this yet because you could break the cork (especially if you’re twisting or bending it).

This is where you use the other section of the tool, pressing it against the bottle and pulling the cork all the way up and out of the bottle. You’ll be ready to pour the first glass of your amazing wine, without having to worry about the cork getting stuck, breaking off or anything else. The tool helps you get everything out just the way you want. Plus, as you get used to it, you’ll be able to do the whole thing a whole lot easier. That’s where you’re going to get a whole lot faster as well.

Why You Want a Wine Key

So, why would you bother to get a wine key for yourself? Well, we’ve actually already answered this question in part, but let’s go over it again. For one thing, a wine key is going to make it much easier for you to open a bottle of wine and enjoy it. That means you’re much more likely to drink wine if you don’t have to worry about all the trouble that usually goes with it. Plus, you’re not going to spend much even on a very good wine key because it’s a small, inexpensive tool. The better question may be, why don’t you want a wine key?
