Best Wine Decanter on the Market Today

Any wine enthusiast knows the importance of a high-quality glass of wine. From a pinot noir to a merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon, all types of wine will benefit from being poured through a wine decanter. The best wine decanters have elegant design while simultaneously holding decantation from the wine, which may contain some sediment. When looking for standard volume, normally a decanter holds the same vino as a 750ml bottle. Also, when comparing to a wine carafe, know that the two products are similar but the latter comes without a stopper, an essential difference. And that the spout of a wine decanter is usually built with easier function regarding the pour. Other than that the two share similar properties.

Essentially decanters fill a purely functional role by merely creating a wide base area to assist with aeration and a suitable opening for mess-free pouring and sediment reduction. They can also be stunningly beautiful, as companies like Riedel have pushed these essential wine accessories into the realm of art. Many of them are handmade, created by artisans at the top of their craft. If you’re going to take the time to let the wine bottle breathe naturally, rather than using a wine aerator, a beautiful wine decanter adds pleasure to this process. An aerating process could be burdensome or unavailable, and a decanter provides a lovely alternative option. To better explain what this process looks like, follow us to the next paragraph.

What does a wine decanter do?

When you open a bottle of wine, the oxygen mingles with the wine at its surface. In this scientific meeting between various chemical compounds, the alcohol and other volatile elements that make up our air evaporate, releasing aromas and casting off some of the bitter taste. Because this process only happens where the wine contacts the air, fully breathing the wine can take a long time if the surface area is small. Considering the neck of a wine bottle certainly constitutes a small surface area, decanters provide a larger surface area to speed up this aeration process. They come in a variety of beautiful shapes and sizes, so their elegance also adds to the ambiance as you pour each glass.

Choosing the perfect decanter

When choosing a wine decanter, you should look for something that’s both stylish and within your budget. So while it aerates your wine it can keep up with the fun shui and aura of your home. A decanter acts often as a talking piece, providing great conversation and can open up other wine enthusiasts to spice up the evening.

When considering what to look for in a wine decanter, there are several considerations. Not only price, size and shape, but also the look material and the ease of pouring and cleaning the wine as well. The wine type is something that should be tied in with those last three: if you can clean the decanter well, there’s no reason it shouldn’t be available for either color.

There are a variety of decanters on the market that range from simple to elaborate. Previously we discussed the best decanters for each of the basic styles. Here, we present ten of the most beautiful wine decanters. These luxury decanters are works of art, usually handmade and created from fine, lead-free crystal. Their beauty and craftsmanship are worthy of presenting your most precious wines.

How to best decant wine

It may take up to 24 hours for the wine to fully breathe, though you’ll notice a big difference after as little as 30 to 40 minutes with most wines. Natural processes take care of most of the aeration process. The only thing that you have to worry about when decanting wine is the sediment.

First, let the unopened bottle sit peacefully for about 24 hours. When you let the wine collect and rest, all the sediment has time to rest at the bottom. This sediment forms in aged red wines when tannins deteriorate and erode. You don’t want these in the final pour, because they cloud the wine and give it a gritty, bitter taste. A decanter is a great tool to remove these bitter particles to ameliorate the quality of your wine glasses at a dinner party.

Once the bottle has been sitting peacefully for some time, allowing all the sediment to collect at the bottom, you want to open the bottle and wipe the neck clean to remove any cork residue. From here you then pour the wine into the decanter. You’ll want to do this slowly, being mindful of the sediment collection. If you prefer being ultra-precise, you can shine a light through the bottle to watch it and make sure it stays inside.

Generally, you will need to leave about an ounce of wine in the bottle to prevent the additional accumulation of sediment. Once poured, feel free to discard this end product. And if you’re really nervous about any sediment residue, it’s also an option to pour your wine through a filter into the decanter to best ensure it’s a great glass of wine.

Step by Step Guide:

1. Let the bottle sit upright for a day or two before opening. This will allow the sediment to sink to the bottom of the bottle.

2. Open the bottle of wine, wipe the neck, and remove any cork residue.

3. Pour the wine slowly from the bottle into the decanter at a 45-degree angle to ensure no tannins slip inside.

4. Once the bottle of wine has been poured within, be sure to leave 1/2 to 1 ounce of wine at the bottle if sediment has collected.

5. From here you just rest and allow the wine to sit for up to four hours before enjoying.

Now that we’ve outlined the process and expectations of a decanter, let’s continue onto the decanter reviews. While a good decanter is simply a vessel that protects the wine and limits sediment and tannins from getting into the wine, know that a lot of attention and effort goes into the design of the decanter. Some of the options below we’ve listed are practically art-design items that double as a wine decanter on the side. So know that these choices are often like investments that provide aesthetic joy to your dinner party or dining room, and are meant to strike a role greater than that of the sediment-remover. And without further adieu, the main section.

From the orchard all the way to your glass, a wine decanter will keep the original sediments in the wine.
